Ion. Abandoned by his wife and left alone to take care of his two children, along with the other responsibilities of being a man, he has to put on a housewife’s outfit every day. He does it truly excellent! He takes care of the children’s hygiene, takes them to and from school by horse-drawn cart, also received from some people with a heart for people. Now, with the cold weather coming, he hastened to build a shelter for it as well.

He doesn’t complain. He doesn’t ask for anything. Perhaps this is one more reason to think of him and his children  more often.

How is Ion doing?

We know his needs. His needs are “everything”.

After a few tens of meters of wet asphalt, away from the main road, on the right, is his little house, which looks strikingly like that little house drawn by little children.

We found him building a toilet in the backyard, helped by one of his brothers. The rusty, bent tin walls of the toilet were already fitted when we arrived.

Ion was happy when we told him what we had in the trunk for him. With his hands tattooed by hard work, he took the box and together with his brother, who was also happy for Ion, carried it into the house where they placed it on the well-swept clay floor.

Witnessing the unpacking of the washing machine was also a fir tree, sitting on a table next to a TV older than grandma. It seemed  like it had just been through a whole season of hurricanes, but now it was safe in the shelter, warmed by the heat of the stove.

Ion is content in his deprivation. That’s him. We left him thinking of the myriad reasons for which we too can be grateful. Thankful to God for our health, for our families, for everything we have. For you, people with a heart for people.

Together, we were able to make a difference. A man like Ion now has a slightly easier life, and his children can continue to go to school without being ashamed of their stained, hand-washed clothes.
